O.E. felt, from W.Gmc. *feltaz "something beaten, compressed wool" (cf. O.S. filt, M.Du. vilt, O.H.G. filz, Ger. Filz, Dan. filt), from P.Gmc.*felt- "to beat," from PIE *pel- "to thrust, strike, drive" (cf. O.C.S.plusti), with a sense of "beating" (see pulse (1)).felt (v.1)
“to make into felt,” early 14c. (implied in felted); see felt (n.).felt (v.2)
